Blue Mercy and Lenny Blue Band to perform April 6
The San Luis Obispo Blues Society welcomes Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy with opening act The Lenny Blue Band on Saturday, April 6 at the SLO Vets Hall located at 801 Grand Ave. This show begins at 8:00pm, with free dance lessons at 7:30pm courtesy of SLO Dance.
Diunna Greenleaf, the leader of Blue Mercy, is a native Texan (Houston) who has a background steeped in gospel music. Influenced by the likes of Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Charles Brown and her own parents, she has developed “Diunna’s style of Blues” in the same tradition as so many other great Texas blues men and women. She combines intricate patches of jazz, gospel and heartfelt soul to create a kind of blues that takes one on an emotional roller coaster ride.
Diunna and her band Blue Mercy have performed at blues festivals throughout the United States and internationally. She has performed with Keb Mo, Willie “Pinetop” Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, James Cotton, Carrie Bell, Smoking Joe Kubek, Anson Funderburge, Bernard Allison, Odetta, Rod Piazza, Kenny Neal, and numerous others. Diunna’s commitment to Blues goes well beyond performing on stage. For three years she had served as President of the Houston Blues Society, she helped to produce the Willie Mae Thornton Blues Festival, and she helped to create a Blues in Schools program throughout the state.
Greenleaf was nominated for the Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year at the 2009, 2012, and 2013 Blues Music Awards. She won the Best New Artist Debut at the 2008 Blues Music Awards. Her CD Trying to Hold On was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2012 at the Blues Music Awards. The CD was #1 on XM/Sirius Radio Bluesville Chart and Living Blues charts during 2012, and was at the top of Blues charts in UK, Australia and USA.
The Lenny Blue Band has been swingin’ the blues on the Central Coast for nearly a decade. The band performs many groove-powered original songs along with electrifying arrangements of familiar standards from all shades of Blues from the likes of Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Reed, Rufus Thomas, Magic Sam and B.B.King, to name just a few. The Band is fronted by the deeply soulful singing voice of Lenny Blue, powered by lead guitarist Ed Frawley, Billy Baxmeyer on bass and groove-meister Daryl Vandruff on drums. They deliver a big dose of the Blues-power… so be sure to wear your dancin’ shoes. Check out their upcoming 2013 show dates.
