Horsetail has a variety of medicinal properties. It is rich in silica which helps rebuild the elasticity of the skin, hair and nails. It is a diuretic and tonic for detoxification and cleansing and it also aids in strengthening the connective tissues in the body. Horsetail builds the body’s immune system and is effective as a spring cleansing tonic and detoxification. It is also a major herb in biodynamic farming to help rejuvenate soil.
I use horsetail in a salve for varicose veins. It relieves the stress on the veins and can assist in healing. It can be put in a tincture for preventing & alleviating osteoporosis and to build strong bones and strengthen connective tissue.
Horsetails are over 200 million years old. At that time, horsetails were giant fernlike trees. The species still alive today are small by comparison to their ancestors. Horsetail grows in moist woods and roadsides. They grow along the wet creek beds of our local Botanical Garden in SLO.
Try horsetail in our spring detox tea to give your immune system and bones a burst of energy!
