The first month of the New Year features various planets either changing sign or direction. In addition, we have an acceleration of the ongoing dynamic, at times explosive interaction between intense, controlling, secretive Pluto in status quo, corporate, materially oriented Capricorn, and rebellious, freedom loving, egalitarian, progressive Uranus in assertive, independent Aries. These two transpersonal planets in tense interaction with one another have been affecting/reflecting life on planet Earth on both a personal and global scale for the past several years. Yet Pluto is also about elimination, transformation, rebirth, and renewal, while Uranus aspires to radical change, cultivating a global sense of community, and defining community as communication in unity, mankind aspiring to the ideals of equality, brotherhood, and appreciating the differences among peoples that enhance and nourish life on Planet Earth, our only home.
As we welcome in 2016, planetary changes are happening fairly quickly at month’s beginning, starting with Mercury moving into intellectual, mentally stimulating Aquarius the evening of the 1st, followed by Mars transitioning into passionate, determined Scorpio the morning of the 3rd. Friction quickly occurs between these two personal planets, which may cause tension in any communication, resulting in arguments, expressions of anger, even resentment. With the Sun and Pluto fusing their energies together from the 4th to the 6th, circumstances could be heightened, as may the opportunity to help empower those involved to transform any situation for the better.
Further complicating this combination of celestial events, Mercury turns retrograde on the 5th, which could create confusion or miscommunication. Thankfully, soon after, the Messenger of the Gods moves back into Capricorn on the 8th, the same day Venus and Saturn make a meaningful connection, helping to add structure, reason and stability to whatever is occurring. This Mercury Rx period gives time to to reconsider the areas of responsibility and obligation in your life, especially work, career, and finances. In fact, reevaluating how you commit your energy and resources may help you eliminate any roadblocks, either self generated, or from elsewhere, that hinder you from doing your best. When Mercury turns direct on the 25th, it will be intensely interacting with Pluto, which will help focus your mind regarding any decision making or important communication. Venus entering into Capricorn at this time may assist in any decisions around career or finances. In addition, the Full Moon in Leo on the 23rd will likely shine a light on how important these issues are to you, especially as to how they affect your need for independence and self sufficiency.
At this point, in true Capricorn fashion, we need to take a step backward and revisit events earlier in the month. As mentioned above, energetic Mars moved into Scorpio on the 3rd, where he will remain until early March. This planet/sign combination can be used productively by asserting yourself in a focused, self contained, determined fashion. Avoid any tendency toward stubbornness, or letting anger fester, and this can be an opportunity to generate your deepest emotional and material resources to get much accomplished.
The New Moon on the 9th, the first lunation of 2016, is a powerful expression of Capricorn energy, as the new moon point is strongly influenced by both Uranus and Pluto, and to a lesser degree Chiron and Jupiter. As the sign of the Sea Goat represents our highest ambitions and aspirations, and is a materially oriented Earth sign, these planetary dynamics could have us asking the questions, “Are my work and career goals in line with my highest spiritual potential?”, or, “Is what I do of service to the greater good of myself and others?”. It may be that radical change is something you reflect upon or even initiate, especially if you feel the need for a greater sense of independence. In addition, with Pluto and Chiron, the two heavenly bodies that relate to deep and profound psychological and emotional healing, in the mix, introspection, self reflection, forgiveness, and letting go, could also be part of what you embrace in the weeks ahead.
Finally, Jupiter, the planet of optimism, wisdom, faith, one’s philosophical approach to life, publishing, an interest in foreign lands, higher education, and more, turns Rx on the 7th, and will not go forward (direct) until May 9th. Presently, Jupiter is in the reserved, work oriented Earth sign Virgo, which can restrain his natural enthusiasm and forward thinking. Yet this is an opportune time to reflect on the state of your health. If applicable, do your best to remove detrimental habit patterns that relate to poor diet, overwork, worry, criticism of self and others. Replace any of these with practical objectives around better self care, expanding your horizons regarding what fulfills you on the job, and how you can be of greater service to your fellow brothers and sisters, and Mother Earth.
We live in times of challenge and opportunity on a personal and global scale. The beginning of 2016 certainly puts this statement front and center. Embrace what comes your way with Capricorn qualities of responsibility, determination, and commitment. And don’t forget to have a sense of humor as your journey unfolds.
