Milo Yiannopoulos, an alt-right activist who has been invited by Cal Poly Republicans to speak at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo on Jan 31, 2017. Yiannopoulos is an editor and writer at Breitbart News and is a vocal critic of feminism, Islam, and social justice. He has been banned from Twitter for initiating harassment campaigns against individuals.
A petition requesting Cal Poly President Armstrong require a change of format for Milo’s talk was filed by Heidi Peterson and is available on change.org. Rather than banning Milo from speaking, as some have requested, Harmon’s petition requests that Cal Poly President Armstrong require a change of format for Milo’s talk from an uncontested speech to that of a panel discussion. Cal Poly set a precedent for such a format change back in 2009 when, one week prior to his speech, it decided respected author and environmental award winner Michael Pollan could speak only within the format of a panel discussion (his ideas for agriculture were just too radical for one of Cal Poly’s major donors who demanded the change). You can read more about it in the petition description.
Peterson is promoting this petition and fighting for this format change. She’s been sharing it with many progressive groups here on the Central Coast, and plans to get it out to progressive groups on other campuses where he is a scheduled to speak.
