Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by area, centered on Narragansett Bay and a closely connected network of towns and cities. Providence is the capital and largest city, while Newport has a maritime and tourism economy. Education, health care and design-related industries contribute to employment. Coastal flooding, old infrastructure, limited land for housing and changing marine conditions affect local planning decisions.
